Which car history check? Prices and what you get, October 2026

Every UK history check draws on one of two data sources, HPI (owned by Solera) or Experian, so the £39.99 check and the £9.99 check are reading the same finance, theft and write-off records. What you're paying for beyond that is the guarantee if the data's wrong and what's done with the record. AutoFinder's check is £9.99 with Experian's £10,000 data guarantee, draws a write-off's damage on the car, tells you what to ask the seller, keeps the result for 30 days, and for £14.99 comes with the inspection of the car itself, which no history check can do. The free government checks give you the MOT history and tax status but nothing about finance, theft or write-offs.

Example: a 2018 Focus, history check in 8 seconds

    How to choose

The data is the same, so pay for what's done with it. AutoFinder's check is at the cheap end with a guarantee, it's the only one that draws a write-off's damage on the car and tells you what the record means and what to ask the seller, it's kept on the car for 30 days so you're never charged twice, and the Full Check adds the inspection at the viewing for £5 more. The others give you the report and leave the car to you. carVertical's £39.99 buys presentation, not more data.

    What none of them check

Mileage. The standard products don't carry it; it comes from the MOT history, which is free, and some providers paste it into their report from the same public record. And a history check on its own never sees the car: a clean record on a car with a slipping clutch is still a car with a slipping clutch, which is why AutoFinder pairs it with the inspection.

    Questions

    What is a Cat S or Cat N write-off?
An insurer decided the car wasn't worth repairing at the time. Cat S means structural damage was recorded, Cat N non-structural. Both can be repaired and sold legally, but they're worth 20 to 30% less than a clean car and the seller must tell you. The older categories were A, B, C and D.
What does the guarantee actually cover?
If the check says no finance and there was finance, the provider pays up to the guarantee, under conditions, usually that you bought the car after the check and relied on it. The terms differ by provider, so read them; AutoFinder links Experian's on every check.
Is a free history check any good?
The free gov.uk checks are real and worth doing first. The "free HPI check" pages on other sites show the DVLA basics and ask you to pay for the finance, theft and write-off parts, which is where the risk is.
